Implants

Implants

Implants are an alternative to bridges and dentures. Implants are permanent tooth replacements. They are anchored into your jawbone and act as an anchor to hold your replacement teeth in place.

Dental implants

Dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone, and they are generally made from titanium. Titanium is a strong metal that fuses to the bone over time through a process called osseointegration. The implant acts as an artificial tooth root and provides a strong foundation for replacement teeth that look and function like natural teeth.

An implant-supported denture or bridge is a set of prosthetic teeth that is anchored by two or more dental implants. To replace each missing tooth, one implant is placed into the bone for each anchor point. The bridge is then attached to the implants. For dentures, the denture base fits over the gums and the dental implants snap or screw into place to hold it in place.

Because an implant functions just like a natural tooth, it restores chewing ability and prevents other health problems that can occur when you have missing teeth. As an added benefit, it also prevents further bone loss in the jaw.

Dentures

Many patients come to our office to discuss implant-supported dentures. These restorations are ideal for patients who need to replace an entire arch of teeth, or a full mouth—typically after they’ve had extractions. They are designed to feel and function just like natural teeth, so most patients find them to be more comfortable than wearing traditional dentures.

Unlike traditional dentures, which sit on top of the gums, an implant-supported denture is anchored securely by dental implants that are surgically placed within the jawbone. This means that the implant-supported denture won’t slip out of place while you eat and speak like traditional dentures can. Instead, you’ll be able to chew your food comfortably, speak clearly, and enjoy your other daily activities without worry. Plus, because the implants actually stimulate the bone in the jaw, they can help to regenerate the tissue and prevent further deterioration of your jawbone. Finally, because they also support your facial muscles, they can prevent facial sagging and wrinkles.

If you’re considering getting implant-supported dentures for yourself, please contact our office to schedule your consultation today. We’ll get you in to see Dr. Dana Walters as soon as possible so we can get you started on the process of restoring your smile!
