What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry allows patients who may be feeling anxious or fearful about an upcoming treatment to receive medication to help them remain calm and relaxed throughout their visit. At our office, we offer both oral and intravenous sedation options depending on a patient’s individual needs. Patients who receive oral sedation take a pill about an hour before their appointment that allows them to feel relaxed and at ease during their appointment. Oral sedatives typically begin to work after about one hour and can be safely taken with most patients without any restrictions prior to treatment. These medications are effective for patients who are nervous about their procedures but do not require a deeper level of relaxation. Intravenous sedation is administered throughout the entire procedure by one of our experienced dentists who administers the calming agent directly into your bloodstream. IV sedation allows you to completely relax throughout your treatment and is highly effective for patients who suffer from severe anxiety. Your dentist will discuss all your sedation options with you to determine the best approach for your needs. Most patients only require minimal to moderate levels of sedation to successfully undergo dental treatments and are able to safely and comfortably drive themselves home after treatment.

Dental FAQs

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants are a wonderful long-term solution for missing teeth that can restore your mouth to a beautiful, healthy state. However, not all patients are good candidates for implants, so we will carefully evaluate your smile and oral health to determine if this treatment is right for you. Some of the factors that may make you a better candidate for implant placement include a strong jawbone and healthy gums. During your

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that relaxes patients during dental treatments. It’s safe for all ages and is inhaled through a mask that fits over the patient’s mouth. Patients are awake enough to respond to requests from the dentist but feel relaxed and at ease during the procedures and procedures take longer to complete. It’s a great option for patients who are anxious about visiting their dentist or who need multiple dental procedures performed at one time. After the procedure is done, the nitrous oxide will wear off quickly. Many patients prefer this to oral sedation because it’s fast-acting and has a shorter recovery time than pills. It’s also a great option for people who have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep after taking medications. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, and sore throat. These usually go away shortly after the procedure is over. Nitrous oxide isn’t typically used for patients with breathing problems because it can cause respiratory depression. It’s an anesthetic agent so it carries some risks in that it won’t prevent pain in the area you’re having treated. Your dentist may recommend combining nitrous oxide with other medications for safe and effective results.

Oral sedation

Oral sedatives, such as Triazolam or Halcion, are taken one hour before your appointment and they typically take effect within 20 minutes. These medications are taken by mouth and are designed to relax you throughout your treatment. However, patients should avoid driving after oral sedation due to the medication’s side effects. You should arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure. Once the effects of the oral sedative have worn off after treatment is complete, you will be able to resume your normal activities.

General anesthesia

There are two types of sedation offered in dental office, including inhaled and oral conscious sedation. Inhaled sedation is known as laughing gas. This form of sedation is delivered through a mask that fits over the nose. The dentist can control the amount of nitrous oxide that the patient receives during treatment. Oral conscious sedation is administered in pill form before the appointment. This type of sedation is easy to administer and ensures little to no memory of the procedure afterward. Most dentists offer both forms of sedation so that patients can choose the best type for their unique situation.

Patients who undergo sedation dentistry experience less pain or discomfort during their treatment. As a result, they can relax and remain still while the dentist works on their mouth. Many patients are afraid to go to the dentist because they suffer so much anxiety or fear when they sit in the waiting room. However, this type of dentistry allows them to receive dental treatments that they may need without any stress.
