Veneers

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is placed over a tooth to improve its appearance. Veneers are usually used to fix teeth that are chipped, stained, or crooked. They are also used to cover gaps between teeth.

What are veneers?

Once you’ve decided on dental implants, you can move on to planning your cosmetic treatment. The most common way to hide your replacement tooth is with porcelain veneers. They’re thin shells that go over the front surface of your teeth. Unlike dental crowns, which are placed over the entire tooth, only the front of your tooth will be covered with veneers.

The veneer material can be customized to match your surrounding teeth in terms of shape and color. You can even get your smile whitened before getting them applied if you’d like. That way, your new smile will look bright and natural.

To get them on, your dentist will first need to remove a small amount of enamel from the surface of the tooth so the veneers don’t look bulky and unnatural. Then, he’ll take impressions of your teeth to send over to a lab where the veneers will be made. You’ll wear temporary ones in the meantime. When they’re ready, you’ll come back in for a final fitting. Your dentist will check the fit before bonding them to the tooth using a special cement. With proper care, they can last for several years. If you take good care of your veneers by flossing daily, maintaining good oral hygiene, and avoiding biting down on hard foods or ice, they can really last a long time.

How are veneers made?

The dentist takes an impression of your teeth to create a model, which acts as the template for the veneer to be fabricated from. During your second visit to the dentist’s office, the veneer will be checked to ensure the proper fit and color match before cementing it permanently to the front surface of the tooth. After the tooth is prepped, the dentist will apply a special cement and bond it to the enamel of the tooth. Once in position, your dentist will use a special ultraviolet light to harden and set the bonding agent to complete the process.

Are veneers permanent?

A veneer is a permanent solution for many cosmetic flaws like cracked teeth, misalignment, and gaps between teeth. However, there are some cases where the veneer may need to be removed or replaced.

If your tooth experiences some sort of trauma, it may cause your veneer to loosen or even fall off the tooth entirely. When this happens, you may experience some discomfort and pain until your veneers can be replaced. If this occurs, make sure to schedule an appointment with us right away so we can see what we can do!

While it’s very uncommon for veneers to chip, it’s possible that they may become damaged over time. You can prevent damage to your veneers simply by practicing good oral hygiene habits, including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and visiting us twice a year for your routine checkups and cleanings. This will help ensure your smile stays healthy at all times!

Alternatively, if you experience any cavities in between your veneers, they may also need to be replaced as treating decay between the teeth would require removing the veneers. In this case, we will likely need to replace them with a new set since individual teeth cannot support a new restoration on their own. In this situation, it may be necessary to replace the entire arch of teeth instead of just one tooth at a time.

If you suspect you may need new veneers or have questions about your current ones, call our dental office today to schedule a consultation with us! We look forward to helping you in any way we can!

**NOTE** It is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks when you first receive your veneers. This sensitivity should subside after a few weeks. If you have persistent discomfort after receiving your veneers, call our office for assistance.

Do veneers require special care?

Caring for your porcelain veneers is easy, but requires regular care. You will want to brush and floss your teeth several times a day as usual, and you will want to schedule your regular dental appointments for cleanings and exams as recommended. Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant as long as patients maintain good oral hygiene habits. Avoid food and drinks that are dark in color or can stain teeth, such as red wine, coffee, tea and soda. If you grind your teeth at night, you may want to consider a mouth guard to protect your veneers from damage. You should quit smoking and avoid chewing on hard objects that can crack or chip your restorations. Your dentist can help you develop a good treatment plan for your veneers that will protect your investment.
